POLICE HERO – Lt. Col ARNAUD BELTRAME

On the 25th March, French Police Officer, Lt. Col. A. Beltrame, 44 years young, fell as a hero for his act of courage in voluntarily exchanging himself for a female hostage during a terrorist attack in the town of Trèbes, in southwest France. President Macron awarded Col. Beltrame the title of Commander of the Legion of Honour, one of the highest accolades that France bestows. He said: “The light that Colonel Beltrame lit will not die with him,” “He symbolized the French spirit of resistance.” Lt. Col. Beltrame was a distinguished Freemason in the Grande Loge de France and received public honours from his Grand Lodge. The GLMMM salutes him with the masonic maxim:
MAY LIGHT PERPETUAL SHINE ON HIM

MIXED FREEMASONRY

Mixed Freemasonry was founded in Paris in 1881 as the ‘Grand Loge Symbolique Ecossaise Mixte de France’, with the assistance of Dr Georges Martin, a physician, champion of equal rights for women and a prominent member of the ‘Grand Loge Symbolique Ecossaise Mixte de France’ together with Maria Deraismes, French author, lecturer and an important pioneer for human rights.

MARIA DERAISMES

Maria Desraismes (1828 – 1894) was a French author and an important pioneer for women’s rights. Maria Deraismes was initiated into Freemasonry on 14 January 1882, and joined “Les Libres Penseurs” Lodge, at Pecq, near Paris. A year later, she and Georges Martin organized a Masonic lodge that accepted both men and women as members. Out of this co-masonic Lodge came the Grande Loge Symbolique Ecossaise “Le Droit Humain”, which grew into the International Order of Freemasonry “Le Droit Humain”.

DR. ANNIE BESANT

Dr. Annie Besant (1847 -1933 ) was invited to France, in 1902 with fellow theosophist Frances Arundale, to be admitted into La Grande Loge Symbolique Mixte – Le Droit Humain, Paris. Annie successfully negotiated with the French governing body to include three important tenets in the English Masonic ritual, a Belief in a Supreme Being – the Great Architect of the Universe and the Volume of the Sacred Law. Annie returned to England bearing a Charter, and founded the first Lodge of International Mixed Masonry in London, Human Duty No. 6, and became its first Master; and eventually the Order’s Most Puissant Grand Commander. George Bernard Shaw considered her to be Britain’s greatest orator.
